LEP response to Housing White Paper
Responding to publication of the Government’s Housing White Paper today, LEP Chief Executive Sandra Rothwell said: “We have low wages and high housing costs in our area and a pressing need for more affordable and market homes to buy and rent. The LEP is committed to accelerating housing delivery in the right places and that is at the heart of the White Paper.
“There are proposals to encourage housing associations and local authorities to build more affordable homes and measures to help developers, especially small builders. That is welcome because 60% of new homes in the UK are built by just 10 companies and we have many small contractors renowned for their quality and innovation in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
“We particularly welcome Government moves to promote more modular and factory built homes, which follows news this week that Cornish company CIS is to build a new factory at the Aerohub Business Park aimed at producing modular homes for the affordable housing market.
“The Government has pledged to target its £2.3 billion Housing Infrastructure Fund at unlocking development, which is what the LEP is doing with our £60 million Growth Deal funding, including sites in Saltash, Truro, Newquay and Penryn. And there are proposals to maintain strong protection for green belt land, which is very important.
“We need to view housing as a driver for growth. It not only provides homes for the people that local businesses employ, but also creates skills, training and supply chain opportunities during construction. That’s why our construction strategy is working with industry to make the most of those economic opportunities, and the White Paper has a number of welcome measures to tackle skills shortages in the industry.”
