LEP drives project to improve business regulation in Cornwall
The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly LEP and partners are celebrating the ongoing success of a major project designed to help Cornwall’s business grow, while saving time and money. Better Business for All is about working with the business community to improve how regulatory services are delivered in Cornwall.
The Better Business for All partnership has launched a new brochure to show the positive impact of the project in its first two years. Tackling Regulation together: How better regulation delivery is helping Cornwall’s businesses grow, save time and money is now available on the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Growth Hub.
Tackling Regulation Together outlines what Better Business for All has delivered to Cornish businesses to improve regulatory delivery in the county. This includes the launch of the Business Regulatory Support Service which launched in January 2016 to offer businesses a single point of contact for advice on regulations, from food hygiene and licensing to planning and fire safety.
Alongside case studies from Cornish businesses including Crantock Bakery and the Great Cornish Food Store, the brochure shows how:
- Cornwall Council regulators carry out more than 50,000 interactions with businesses each year.
- 600 businesses received advice, support and signposting in the first six months of the new Business Regulatory Support Service.
- 71% of businesses contacting the Business Regulatory Support Service are new enterprises.
LEP Board Director Sarah Trethowan said: “We have listened to what businesses have told us makes regulatory compliance difficult, costly and time consuming and we are tackling these issues head on, by creating practical solutions. We have heard from many businesses – from start-ups to some of the county’s biggest players – that BBFA is helping them save time and money, grow and be more competitive.
“With Cornwall Council, Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Small Businesses and business representatives we are now setting an example to the rest of the country on how good, supportive regulation can contribute to business growth and competitiveness.”
In 2016, Cornwall’s Better Business for All partnership was voted the best business-regulator partnership in the country, by the Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Better Business for All is managed by a steering group which includes small and large regulated businesses in Cornwall, the Federation of Small Businesses, Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership and representatives from a cross-section of regulatory services at Cornwall Council (including Environmental Health, Licensing, Trading Standards, Fire, Planning and Building Control).
