Cornwall Devolution Deal - History of the deal

Thursday 16 July 2015, saw the Prime Minister, David Cameron and the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Greg Clark come to Cornwall to officially sign Cornwall's first Devolution Deal, the first of its type in the country.

This Deal is fantastic news for Cornwall. It means more than £5bn of government funding being given to Cornwall to manage in the areas of transport, health and social care, property and European funding. This is the first major step on a longer journey towards delivering the full Case for Cornwall.

The Prime Minister said this devolution deal was not the end of handing powers to Cornwall and that the Government would continue to listen to proposals put forward on devolving more powers in the future.

For the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly LEP in particular, there are specific opportunities to develop a new approach to employment, skills and business support that gives the private sector a lead voice in future provision.

There are also significant opportunities around renewable energy that will directly support the delivery of the LEP's Future Economy priorities as set out in our Strategic Economic Plan. Add to all of this the ability to make our own local decisions on EU investments, and it becomes clear just how important this Deal actually is.

There is much to do now on developing the detail behind the implementation of these important areas – but within this Deal is a genuine opportunity to shape the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly economy in a way which is bespoke to our needs, and puts business in the driving seat of business support, skills and employment. Find out more about Devolution here
