The islands offer significant investment opportunity, business potential and training opportunities. Important infrastructure improvements to St. Mary's Airport, Lands' End Airport and St. Marys Quay guarantee a future for improved transport provision on the isles. New workspace on St. Mary's and St. Agnes offers those with ambition a hub to develop and grow their business, all in landscape of an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Through the 'Island Futures' SEP the following priorities will be delivered through themed action plans:

  • To secure resilient, year-round transport services to Cornwall and further afield
  • To improve the quality of the tourism offer
  • To promote the Isles of Scilly more effectively
  • To diversify the economy
  • To create more collaborative opportunities for the islands' businesses
  • To make the islands more self-sufficient and more resilient to future changes

Smart Islands programme

The Smart Islands programme is intended to sustainably and affordably tackle some of the Isles of Scilly’s main infrastructure and utilities issues, whilst providing a model for how other communities can profit from a rapid transition from being carbon intensive to having a low carbon footprint. The programme targets several of the Islands Futures priorities and has the following goals:

  • 20% reduction in electricity bills by 2020 (40% by 2025)
  • 40% of the islands’ energy demand met through renewable generation by 2025
  • 40% of vehicles being low carbon or electric by 2025

Internships, cultural exchange and STEM skill delivery for young people

Full programme of energy efficiency measures delivered by 2020

The programme is being managed through a partnership made up of the following organisations:

  • The Duchy of Cornwall
  • The Council of the Isles of Scilly
  • Tresco Estates
  • Hitachi Europe Ltd
  • The Islands' Partnership

A key options analysis for meeting the programme’s energy targets was funded by the CIOS LEP and is available here.
